Ludwig’s Bridges

Munich, Germany / 06.2020 - 01.2024

The Ludwigsbrücken are among the historic crossings over the Isar in the centre of Munich. As early as the 12th century, one of the first permanent crossings over the Isar was built on this site. Today’s bridges connect the city centre with the eastern part of the city and are a defining feature of the cityscape in the Museum Island area. The PORR Saaldorf-Surheim branch was commissioned to carry out the structural reinforcement and general refurbishment of the bridges, as well as the adjacent pedestrian and cycle underpasses. The project was supported by specialist departments from PORR Building Construction Upper Austria and PORR Civil Engineering Tyrol.

Major refurbishment of the Ludwigsbrücken bridges in Munich

Restoration of historic bridges

The Inner and Outer Ludwigsbrücken are separated by Museum Island. The reinforced concrete arch bridges, built in 1934 and 1935, are clad in natural stone and are the focus of a multi-phase restoration project.

During routine structural inspections, damage was identified in various components, necessitating a comprehensive rehabilitation.

Work above the River Isar

During the first phase of construction, the transverse reinforcement on the underside of the Outer Ludwigsbrücke was reinforced in sections. The work took place just a few metres above the River Isar and had to be adapted to the local conditions of the river area.

Renovation of underpasses and carriageway slabs

The second construction phase focused on the vaulted ceilings of the pedestrian underpasses as well as the carriageway slabs of the bridges. To this end, existing structural elements were exposed, dismantled and rebuilt in sections. The work was carried out step by step within the existing structure.

Work on the crown joints

The third construction phase involves the reinforcement of the crown joints of the bridge structures. During the course of the works, additional investigations were carried out on the existing structures. Based on these results, the scope of the measures originally planned was adjusted. The work now focuses on reinforcing the split-tension reinforcement using concrete bolts.

Preservation of a historic crossing over the Isar

The comprehensive rehabilitation of the Ludwigsbrücken bridges combines structural engineering, concrete repair as well as work on existing structures within a historically significant setting. In addition to the rehabilitation of the bridge structures, the project focuses in particular on the phased renewal of existing structures as well as the preservation of a key crossing over the Isar within the Munich city area.
