Schmittentunnel escape and rescue tunnel for greater safety

Described by the Province of Salzburg as the ‘little brother’ of the main tunnel – which is twice its size – the tunnel has been enhancing safety for road users in the main tunnel ever since the construction work was completed.

In total, PORR carried out the following works in the North contract section:

  • 1,770 m of NATM tunnelling in the small cross-section of the escape tunnel, involving around 83,000 mÂł of excavated material
  • Excavation of five new cross-passages in the existing road tunnel
  • Paving and road surface installation throughout the entire tunnel system

The severely limited space in the portal area of the existing SeehĂ€usl escape tunnel posed a particular challenge during the execution of the works. The construction contract was also unusual, as it was an ‘alliance contract light’ that focused solely on the execution of the construction works.

Despite these challenges, PORR was able to complete the project efficiently and on schedule with its experienced team of regional specialists.

What ultimately counts in the construction business is successfully completed projects. PORR has many of these.
