Fleet management reimagined
Between April 2023 and May 2024, Nägele Hoch- und Tiefbau GmbH acted as general contractor for the construction of the new fleet building in Rodund/Vandans. The project serves as a central hub for the complete fleet maintenance of the entire Illwerke-VKW Group, Vorarlberg's leading energy supplier with over a century of history and a clear responsibility for future generations.
The new location is designed for the operation and maintenance of an extensive vehicle fleet consisting of around 180 cars and buses, 5 trucks, around 40 trailers and numerous small vehicles. At the heart of the building is a state-of-the-art car and truck workshop that ensures efficient workflows and high technical standards. A total of three workshop bays for cars, one workshop bay for commercial vehicles and an assembly pit for trucks are available. The equipment is supplemented by brake test benches for cars and trucks and a tyre storage facility for around 100 cars.
Another key element is the integrated transformer station with emergency power supply, which ensures the power supply to the Illwerke-VKW headquarters in Vandans when needed, thus making a significant contribution to the operational reliability of the energy infrastructure. A gantry car wash for cars and commercial vehicles and a lance wash for trucks have been installed for vehicle maintenance.
The project also sets clear standards in terms of sustainability: the building is heated by a heat pump that uses groundwater, and the building envelope was constructed with a high-quality, durable aluminium façade ( ), supplemented by a green roof to improve the microclimate. A carport with 25 parking spaces, equipped with electric charging stations, has also been integrated into the slope, consistently supporting Illwerke VKW's electric mobility strategy.
The project was implemented in close cooperation between several specialist departments, including building construction, asphalt and paving construction, the IAT timber construction department (facade) and blacktop and plumbing work. The Rodund vehicle fleet building is thus an example of efficient industrial and infrastructure construction, in which functionality, sustainability and technical precision are seamlessly integrated.
