Asbestos is still present in many older buildings and poses a serious health risk during demolition or dismantling. Professional asbestos and pollutant remediation in accordance with the highest safety standards to protect people and the environment is one of the focal points of PORR Umwelttechnik. Years of experience in the removal of hazardous substances guarantee the safe and professional execution of industrial decommissioning and demolition work.

Decontamination
during deconstruction and demolition work

The danger of asbestos – the release of microscopic fibres – manifests itself when mechanical forces are applied to building materials during demolition, maintenance and renovation work.  As inhaled asbestos fibres cannot be broken down by the body, only appropriate protective measures can prevent significant, carcinogenic releases.

Asbestos is a fibrous natural material that was previously often used in various areas of construction due to its ideal technical properties – high heat and chemical resistance, tensile strength and insulating capacity – as well as its low cost: in the manufacture of roofing, facade and insulation panels, seals and floor coverings. It was also added to cement, paints, fillers, joint compounds and adhesives. To determine whether asbestos is present, either an expert assessment by specialists is sufficient or, depending on the processing, a detailed evaluation under a microscope is necessary.

The safety of all those involved and the environment is our top priority. Without exception, our trained staff are equipped with special protective suits, masks and gloves. Each remediation project is carefully planned and carried out in isolated areas with state-of-the-art filter systems and airlocks. After thorough cleaning, precise measurements are taken to check that the area is safe. PORR Umwelttechnik also carries out Austria-wide decontamination of rooms that show contamination with PAHs, PCBs, KMF, lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium and other toxic substances.

Between 1950 and 1990, around 870,000 tonnes of asbestos were used in construction in Austria, most of which has not yet been removed. PORR is making a major contribution to reducing this amount every year.
